What is a Mikey?

A Friendly Name for a Life-Saving Device

A MIKEY is a Public Access Defibrillator (PAD)—also known as an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). We know “defibrillator” can be hard to spell (and even harder to say), so we simply call them MIKEYs.

What Does a MIKEY Do?

A MIKEY is a portable, user-friendly device that automatically detects life-threatening heart rhythms. If it recognizes a problem that can be corrected with a shock, the MIKEY will guide the user to deliver that potentially life-saving shock—helping restore a normal heartbeat.

And the best part? You don’t have to be a medical professional to use one.

Designed for Everyday Heroes

MIKEYs are built for use by anyone. With clear voice prompts and visual cues, these devices walk you through every step. Some models require the user to press a button to deliver a shock. Others do it automatically when needed. Either way, the MIKEY is always in control—analyzing the heart’s rhythm and only acting when it’s safe to do so.

Why MIKEY Matters

Using a MIKEY within minutes of cardiac arrest can increase a person’s chance of survival by up to 50%. Each year, hundreds of lives are saved thanks to public access defibrillators—and with your help, we can reach even more.
